My two favorite board/card games are Cosmic Encounter and Sentinels of the Multiverse. The first is amazing for replayability and also a good mix of skill/diplomacy/luck; the second has really fun theme and story to match the mechanics (usually). I only have the core set of Sentinels of the Multiverse but it's a lot of fun, I've played it a decent amount with my partner. It's real simplistic but, it's a blast

I enjoy Sentinels of the Multiverse quite a bit. It's a fun little romp! Sometimes it gets a little messy but I don't mind since I'm here for that!
I played Cosmic Encounters once and I got dealt the Filch racial ability. It was great since it literally told you to cheat. I had so much fun with that. However, I think that's about the highlight of that game for me. I don't think it's ever going to get better than that.

Recent additions to the game also got rid of the "cheat" ability for Filch. Don't worry though, the game is still fun without it.
Sentinels is a lot of fun for me because I could generally always get my college friends to sit and play a round if we were bored, /!: occasionally we'd pull of sick combos we weren't expecting. Also the heroes in the expansions tend to have a lot more cards and powers that are more interesting than "hit for 3" and "draw."

But the cheat ability is what made that game fun! For me, at least.
Sentinels is a nice gun have that's pretty easy to just pick up and play provided you've got at least one person who already knows how. If not, I think it might get a bit muddled but would be fine.

Yikes! I was hyped for SeaFall but wasn't aware of the price until today. With the mixed reviews it is getting, I am a little hesitant to drop €90 on it... Anyone got any experience with it already?

I could have sworn that someone mentioned Seafall earlier. Was it Plum?

So today I met a Star Slayer and oh my god he is adorable! *blushes* I on the other hand met the one and only Plum yesterday. And she is just as friendly and enthusiastic as her posts have always suggested! ... That is quite the haul you got there. I bought very little on Thursday, but I will be back on Sunday for more! Ironically, while the world's biggest board game convention was going on, I got the most exciting game not there, but today via post: The Codex Deluxe Set has finally arrived!

I see you have bought INIS, a game which got some really good reviews and which looks pretty interesting. Have you bought because you heard positive things about it or have your already played it? This game is near the top of my list of games I would buy tomorrow.
I also noticed Kanagawa, Days of Ire and Unicornus Knights while wandering through the halls.

We played a two-player Inis last night and I enjoyed it more than my boyfriend. It has an interesting action selection draft with a fixed set of possible actions, so once you know them you can start to plan better. For example, if I made an effort to draft three of the four attack cards, plus the geas card that lets you cancel an opponent's card, then in know I'm probably safe from attack this round, BUT my opponent will have all the interesting non-attack cards instead. My boyfriend was quite tired though and it's a game where you need to be paying attention and thinking. We've not tried unicornus knights yet and bought it solely on the strength of the designer. He's never done a big box game though, so it was a gamble. Definitely get a demo if you can. One more day then I can finally head home and enjoy all my new prizes!

Mal arrived the other day with my new board games that I purchased with the in store credit from selling magic cards. I know own - Argicola
- Carcasonne
- Betrayal of the House on the Hill
- Galaxy Trucker
As soon as it arrives I'll also own Sushi Go, the new version was just on backorder atm.
This going into my current board game library of - Terra Mystica
- 7 Wonders
- Ticket to Ride
- Shadows Over Camelot
- Ascension: Storm of Souls + exp
- Netrunner (base set)
- Arkham Horror
My library still is lacking in certain areas because until recently I lived with all my siblings so our combined library covered a better range of games.
Other fun things. Mal is visiting so we've been playing board games. So far we've played several rounds of Sushi Go, a round of Carcasonne and a round of Broom Service. Broom Service was exactly as excellent as Mal had told me so I'd recommend checking it out.

So Seafall has arrived at my place.
I may be able to play the prologue this weekend (Red Team is making up for losing the first game in September, and I'm filling in for one of my guys who can't make it due to moving into a new house he just bought with his wife), but otherwise, my Legacy groups are focused on Risk and Pandemic at the moment so we can't fully commit to the campaign yet. This weekend's plan was intended for Red's makeup game and other games (like Codex) and the next day Blue Team's October month.
If the prologue doesn't do too dramatically do legacy permanent stuff, I can do a trial run with Blue Team too (the guy on Red Team who's gonna be absent is gonna pick up a copy, or we pitch in, so my copy will be for Blue Team.)

I taught two friends of mine how to play Codex this past weekend and they rather enjoyed it. I learned that I maybe have a better grasp on what to do strategically than they do and I'm just gonna chalk that up to keeping up with the development of the game and reading what other people say more than really anything else.

Played a boat load of board games yesterday. @lettucemode came over after my brothers and I played a couple rounds of Sushi Go. We played Galaxy Trucker, Ascension: Storm of Souls and Tigris and Euphrates. Mal won Galaxy Trucker, I won Ascension and lettucemode won Tigris and Euphrates. Later, after my GF's employees stopped trying to burn the store down while she wasn't there, I played some board games with Mal and my GF. We played Broom Service, Boss Monster and Carcasonne. Broom Service was a super close game that Mal managed to edge out from behind. In 2 rounds of Boss Monster I won both of them (I think? I'm struggling to remember for sure. Mal might of won the first one) and in Carcasonne I managed to win my second game of Carcasonne since buying it.
Thoughts on games. Galaxy Trucker was fantastic and it showed that we had no clue what we were doing. We took forever to build our ships and I discovered the hard way that even when I build a nearly perfect ship for the round it doesn't matter because I end up being at the end of the play order so I hardly get to encounter anything. The real game is clearly the ship building part so I'll have to figure out how to be better at that.
Tigris and Euphrates is hard. It really isn't explainable to someone (on the strategy side, you can obviously mechanically explain it) and I felt like I had almost no impact on the game towards the end because I was so far behind. Personally I think that last place might feel less like a pit you can't climb out of with 4 players but I won't know that until I play the game more with Mal.
Broom Service. I can't express enough how much everyone needs to check this game out. The primary "game" of this game is the fact that everyone has the same 10 card hand of actions they can take and each action has a "brave" or "cowardly" version. When the leading player reveals an action he has to pick one of those. If he chooses "cowardly" he just does something right away. If he chooses "brave" he waits as it goes around the table. Any other player with that action also reveals it and chooses "brave" or "cowardly". After you get through all the players, only the last player to choose "brave" gets to do the "brave" action. However the "brave" action is leaps and bounds better than the "cowardly" one so you really have to take risks sometimes when you're higher up in the player order. And then whoever was the most recent player to be "brave" has to lead next. This interaction is fantastic and tons of fun. Nothing feels worse than choosing "brave" and then getting it stolen from you with the one exception of choosing "cowardly" and then no one else having that action card. Seriously, check this game out.

Very curious to hear what you guys think of Seafall!
I love Tigres and Euphrates but yeah, it's really tough to wrap your head around it. I recommend picking up the iPad version if you can - that will teach you all you need to know and let you practice against easy AI opponents. It's actually how I learned before I picked up the physical edition

I do not have an iPad so I doubt I'll get good at Tigris and Euphrates anytime soon. It's also not something I own, it's something Mal owns and we live several hours apart.
Perhaps I should consider investing in an iPad at some point just to play digital board games on. There are a bunch I can buy for my PC but touch screens are nice for digital board games.

One of the main reasons I picked up an ipad was the number of board games that were getting digital versions. I actually play most of my digital boardgaming through yucata.de but since that works perfectly well on ipad too, I can sit in a cafe at an airport and play a bunch of games

I was actually only just recently pointed towards websites that I can play board games right in my browser which is extra convenient because I just moved and therefore lost my playgroup. I'm aware of yucata.de but haven't used it yet so I don't know what it's board game library looks like.

I'm aware of yucata.de but haven't used it yet so I don't know what it's board game library looks like. It's pretty good, and they focus on games that can be played asynchronously. I have maybe 20-30 games running at once and hop on for 15 minutes a day to work through my outstanding turns. If you have a number of games going at once, it requires that you play the one that has waited for you the longest, so most games will move along at a decent pace. If any of the games interest you, I'm more than happy to play a practice game so that you can get used to the interface before diving into the public invitation list - my user on there is also Plum.

Codex finally turned up! Whoop whoop! Unfortunately the box is too big to fit inside my house, so I've had to rearrange the box contents enough that I can fit my house inside it instead, and that is now how I live. For reals though, that is probably the heaviest game I own.
I also picked up a starter set since and I'm thinking I might actually just carry that and the binders when going over to play with one other person. The deluxe mats are super nice, but the folding boards in the starter set are great for carrying around

I'm teaching myself Backgammon, because as far as I can tell it's pretty much the most widely respected traditional board game with RNG, and I like me some variance.
I guess I can ask, what do people like on the more traditional front? I could spend hours playing Gin if anyone in my social groups would tolerate me.

I just explained the rules of the doubling cube in Backgammon to my mother, who used to play as a kid. Her dad would throw out the doubling cubes, because gambling is sinful.

I've just played my first game of Blood Rage! We've made a couple small rules mistakes but it was very well received. As always with drafting games, missing knowledge about the existence of certain cards makes for a very different 1st-match experience so I'm looking forward to the next game. As an example, the player who had the +5 combat card in his first pack took it immediately and completely caught me off-guard because my expectations for how big combat bonuses would be was totally flawed. I've also bought Fury of Dracula in Essen. We may give it a go on Halloween if we don't end up going to some party.

Any tips for our first Fury of Dracula game? Should we use the basic rules instead of the full ones? Is the Dracula stays at sea strategy discussed on BGG a problem i practice?
