I'm assuming that you mean Junk Art, rather than Modern Art Sadly I've not played that or Men at Work, though I have played Tokyo Highway. I agree with you, Tokyo Highway almost feels more like the aesthetic came first and then a game was loosely built around it. I'm also curious to see if anyone can chip in with a comparison. Failing that, my bf has Junk Art so I'll demand that he plays it with me at the weekend!

Oh, Modern Art is on my wishlist ever since I heard Rob Zacny talking about it on Waypoint Radio a little while back. Sounds way up my alley. Haven't heard anything about Junk Art before, though. -typeytypey- oh, a dexterity game. Hmm, maybe. Not the biggest fan, but they can be fun sometimes.
PAX Unplugged in two days! I haven't set a budget yet. We could be in some trouble. And I might have to miss the Hearts tournament, but I'm definitely in for Cribbage and I'll definitely be able to get a Mahjong learning session in and see some interesting looking panels, so it's all exciting.
We're also going to be staying with a cousin of mine instead of a hotel, which is exciting because 1) I love my cousin and 2) I love saving $330. Boom!

Oh man I'm so jealous! Especially as I heard that Isaac Childres will be talking about the Gloomhaven sequel, Frosthaven!
Have a fantastic trip!

Yep, Isaac Childres is having a panel with Tom Vasel titled "Glomhaven 2" at 10 AM on Saturday morning, and I'd put decent money on that room firecoding. I haven't actually played Gloomhaven, so I'll be off at a panel about the process of converting tabletop games to digital implementations instead - but I'm sure the Gloomhaven fans in attendance (and I'm sure there are many) will have a good time!

I've been hosting regular, themed board game nights in the community room of my apartment building so as to cycle through my board games and the games of my friends. We have a lot of titles but unless we organize something we always play the same things. It's been quite successful, though I have learned that I need to stop making food because otherwise the night centers on that instead since I make delicious food. I'm also super flexible on the theme. If you think you can make really ANY argument that a game fits the theme, roll with it. The point is to play the games we rarely get to, after all! I want to do another one for December but I will have to hold off. I'm confident no one will be available due to holiday and family obligations. I'll probably delay until January for the next one. I think I want to play Fury of Dracula so I'll go for darkness as a theme. Speaking of new games, I'm learning that I'm truly shit at learning to play new games on my own. I really need someone to come crash through it with me, anymore. Good thing my sister is willing to do this and has nearly the exact same taste in games as I do! I'm probably going to figure out how to play Trickerion with her.

Oh boy you're in for a treat then, Trickerion is awesome! But also pretty damn heavy with lots of little rules, so yeah having someone to learn it with will be a big help I usually do similar with my boyfriend - we don't have quite the same taste in games (he prefers games where his careful planning can't be disrupted by messy chaos) but he'll usually at least learn a game with me, both to help with my learning of said game and also so that he can at least claim to have played it before writing it off Fortunately I have a separate Straturday Night group for playing those big overblown strategy games with - Cthulhu Wars, Chaos in the Old World, Rising Sun, Gods War, Forbidden Stars, Cry Havoc... all games that my bf hates! We've been on a hard Gods War jam recently, playing it maybe five times over the last month as we get used to the systems and factions. It's interesting, but doesn't feel nearly as well balanced as Cthulhu Wars (it's spiritual predecessor). It's a solid 7/10 at the moment, but it's possible that as we all get more familiar with the factions that that will change - for better or worse

PAX Unplugged was great as always, but I definitely know that I probably wouldn't enjoy a video game PAX even if I got in for free. I don't think I would be into that kind of expo hall type environment but with loud video game displays in every booth and cetera.
I actually didn't end up playing Cribbage or Hearts but I did enjoy my Mahjong learning session! I never set a budget but I think I blew through it. I got the new version of Tsuro (Phoenix Rising) which is certainly my favorite version of the 3. I got Shobu, which is a really cool little abstract strategy that you play on four boards at once, and I picked up Kingdom and Follow which are both GMless games by Ben Robbins in a similar vein to Microscope.
Other stuff too but I can't remember the names of some of the other things I got off the top of my head, and I'm at work. Oops! Still adapting back to the real world. This office is silent compared to being in a crowded convention center for three days.

Streets of Steel: Kickin' Asphalt: first saw this cool co-op at PAX last year, but didn't pick it up (can't remember if they were out of stock or if I was just overdrawn), but got it now. As "the guy who loves the Final Fight derivative," it would be a huge failing for me to not have this in my collection.
Dracula Unredacted: not actually a game, but I thought it was worth noting. This is a novel derivative of Bram Stoker's Dracula - it's actually the text of the novel Dracula but with marginalia "unredacting" it, with the idea being that British intelligence had tried to recruit Dracula as an agent. It's supposed to be source material for the Night's Black Agents RPG, which I don't play and don't have any current intentions on playing - but I flipped through it, and said to myself, "oh, this is a massive work of Dracula fanfic. I could absolutely read this" and in the bag it went!

I have a thing for video game to board game conversions (Starcraft and then Brood War were my grail games for years) so I'll be very curious about what you think of Streets of Steel!

Finally got around to getting TIME Stories played. We did have to cheat because we got stuck due to us not realizing one of the codes was hidden on an item. But otherwise, everyone had a good time. On a silly front, looks like FFG gave into demand and actually made their Barkham Horror April Fool's joke into a reality www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2019/12/2/barkham-horror/

Oooooh, I love StarCraft the Board Game! A friend of mine has a copy!
I've read through the rulebook for Trickerion a couple of times now and it doesn't feel confusing so much as just large so that's a bit heartening. I'm really looking forward to playing it. I should also be receiving Mezo shortly and I'm definitely looking forward to that too.

I should also be receiving Mezo shortly and I'm definitely looking forward to that too. I don't get it to the table nearly enough I always have to relearn the rules every time Trickerion's core is pretty simple - place workers to learn tricks, gain resources to enable tricks and actually book theatre space to perform the trick. The main difficulty of the game is that you need to plan and combo your tricks with your opponents tricks to maximise the gains you get from each one, while ensuring that you actually get to perform them at all. It's a delicious game of balance, planning and most importantly, timing. Unlike many worker placements where you simply fight for spaces, you will be watching your opponents like a hawk and constantly calculating what they can do and when they can do it. I love it

Got to play a bunch of stuff I've liked (which is good because I own all of it):
Catacombs is as great as I had hoped! I'm not a big fan of the expansion design but I'm sure some curation will make me enjoy that, too. For those of you who don't know it, Catacombs is a flicking dungeon crawler. The heroes fight throw a series of combat challenges. All movement and combat is done by flicking wooden discs. The new edition has nice neoprene mats as boards.
Men at Work is another dexterity game. Comparing it to my previous one, Tokyo Highways, it's less strategic but the dexterity part is a lot harder and therefore sillier.
The Wingspan expansion is very good. It "only" adds new birds and a few objectives, but they are well-designed and have interesting new abilities.

I finally got around to playing Spirit Island and Root and I super loved Spirit Island. Root is intensive in ways I didn't expect and I can tell already that I will need to be extremely picky about the people I play it with since it's intensely and, in my estimation, unavoidably aggressive. I don't specifically mind that, but I do have to be in a mood for it. I think I definitely want to keep it though so I really don't own any game like Root. I suspect I will like it more as I get to play it.
My next board game night is coming up and I've chosen plants/land as the theme since some of my friends had a game they wanted to play called Herbalism. It looks light and relatively easy so I'm looking forward to trying that out.
I might also get to wrangle some people into Terra Mystica too since I love the fuck outta that game.

Flangles! I loooove Spirit Island, it's one of my absolute favourite games and one that I'll happily play solo. I kickstarted the Jagged Earth expansion and every time I get an email talking about one of the new spirits I get super excited I also love Terra Mystica but mostly play that online (http://www.yucata.de) - both it and Gaia Project seem to have fallen out of rotation at our club which is a pity, but there's so much good stuff coming out that it's hard to find the time for older games Played a bunch of Marvel Champions at the weekend while we're between Arkham campaigns and it's pretty great! I'm particularly liking She-Hulk and Ms Marvel

Fulfillment for the Oceans kickstarter I had been looking forward to had been months late in Germany, even before Corona. Now the game has arrived, I'm itching to play it, but I'm self-isolating alone. And the nature of the game means I shouldn't even satisfy my curiousity and browse the deck. T-T

Heh that sucks. I picked up the Norwegians expansion for Feast For Odin just before the lockdown, but at least that game has a great solo mode so it's not just sitting idle I've been playing a ton of games on Yucata.de as well (it's easy to use the site in English, for my fellow non-German speakers). I'm currently learning First Class and Oracle of Delphi through it, and finishing off a game of Terra Mystica (my first time playing as dwarves and I'm doing terribly) and El Grande. I'm Plum on there if anyone want to give it a try (edit: I should say that Yucata is an async play site, so you can log on once or twice a day, take a turn on all of your outstanding games, then log off. You can play live as well, but I mostly play games spread over a week)

So, after figuring out how to make custom cards in Tabletop Simulator, now I'm back to working on the upcoming Arkham Horror LCG investigators. Starting with the upcoming Starter Deck investigators. Harvey Walters and Jacqueline Fine are next. Then it's the Innsmouth Investigators: Sister Mary, Amanda Sharpe and Trish Scarborough. The remaining two, Dexter Drake and Silas Marsh, I already had done due to them being released earlier in novellas, though I might tweak them to be different.

The Frosthaven Pledge Manager is live and I could use some assistance from GH players:
I was planning to just get Gloomhaven through this, as Frosthaven seems to mostly be more of the same, and GH will arrive way earlier. Buying both now just to save some money on FH doesn't seem too wise to me. Anyway, should I consider any of the GH-related addons? Removable sticker sheets, solo scenarios, "Forgotten Circles"...?

|
|
Post by Plum on May 20, 2020 20:32:13 GMT 1
The removable sticker sheets you only need if you want to replay or sell it on. To be honest though, we use a PDF to track all of that so we don't need to put stickers on the board in the first place. We still put stickers on the cards though, but you could arguably find some way around that too. So basically I wouldn't get that unless you're planning to resell it. Solo scenarios are fun and represent a specific challenge for each character, as well as giving a unique reward. Even if you don't want to do the scenarios, the items are pretty nice. We usually hand them to the character if they hit level 9. You don't need them though - I played through my first campaign without them perfectly happily. So, nice to have but not required. We're currently playing through Forgotten Circles now so I can't talk too much about it. It comes with a new character which is obviously awesome buuuut the campaign is designed to start after you've completed the main campaign, so you're talking about content you won't even see if you don't put 60+ hours at least into the game. We're enjoying it though, but it's hard to recommend unless you know that you enjoy the base game enough to complete it

A guy from the Canary Islands asked to share my work for his Spanish podcast. So now it’s out in the wild.
I still have my own formatted sheets I use for printing, so people who want to make their own mini cards still need to do their own work for that.

The Ankh pledge manager is out and I'll actually have to look into the game now to make a puchasing the dicisions on all those addons. I was very disappointed with myself about missing the Blood Rage and Rising Sun Kickstarters. I'm considering just going for the all-in gameplay pledge. Can always not open the addons until after i've played the core game. Resell value should be good to great... There's also something to be said for a friend of mine who has backed all the expensive KSes in recent years. i feel like it's my turn now.^^

This really is a time of pledge managers! Kemet is here and now I have to consider if the 2 Cthulhu and Nyarlathotop power tiles + minis that we had complained about just a few weeks ago are worth adding on for me. 7€ seems pretty reasonable for an exclusive promo that includes minis...

Just confirmed and added Book of the Dead expansion (plus classic pyramid d4s). I managed to resist all of the Game-Up upgrades in the end. I might regret that later on but in the end I couldn't justify it to myself - the expansion was better value and I'm hoping better play-tested
