Ahmvvar, you overcome the hesitation and enact your plan, rapping firmly on the door; Hadrian stands by your side, ready to assist whether the situation is one of peace or war. You immediately hear a response from inside, though this time, it does not seem especially alarmed or on-edge. Instead, soft footsteps approach at a relaxed pace, and the door opens quickly with the answerer starting to speak some words in an unusual language before stopping abruptly in shock. The occupant is a Gnome of sorts; a Deep Gnome, to be precise, with deep gray skin and a total height that barely comes up to your stomach. His face sports a very prominent disfigurement, with his right eye swelled into a bulbous lump and giving him an extreme asymmetry about him. He sports brown robes fitting his stature - possibly religious in nature - as well as a golden-ish symbol around his neck. The pendant depicts a mushroom-like shape combined with a skull, also being asymmetric in design. You are able to take in all of this information within a split second, which seems to linger forever. During this time, the Gnome's expression shifts between a morphing hodgepodge of surprise, aggression, confusion, and fear. It does not seem like he at all approves of your presence, but he's been paralyzed by indecision on whether to attack you or flee screaming. Finally, his hand begins to reach toward the sheathed dagger at his side. What do you do?

Garm, from behind, pushes aside Ahmvvar and Hadrian to face the gnome. He makes a calming motion with his hand
"Ho, friend gnome! Be still! We mean no harm. We're merely here on a mission to investigate the happenings in this town."
Garm slowly releases the buckle on the leather straps holding his enormous sword, letting it fall flatly on the ground behind him in a sign of nonaggression.
(?? Not clear, but maybe this is defy danger with charisma? Or maybe it's just roleplay.)

[Defying Danger with Charisma is fitting. Even if the character were irredeemably hostile, a success could help you at least pacify them temporarily for a brief moment.] Roll + CHA = 2 + 3 + 1 = 6
[...but not today.] Damage = d6 - armor = 6 - 1 = 5The first sign that your words have had no effect is the pain in your leg as the Gnome's knife runs deep through your calf's muscles. He then proceeds to retreat back into the room, screaming out loudly in the foreign language. It looks like you have a fight on your hands! Unfortunately for you, the odds and the exact nature of the fight are still unclear. What do you do?

"Perhaps we have found more about the source of the corruption here than expected!"
Hadrian steps passed Garm, and Garm's sword, to block the doorway with his shield and survey the interior of the room.
"Willa!" he calls back over his shoulder, "know you anything about these folk?"

Garm's face twists into pain and confusion as he calls out to the fleeing gnome, clutching his wound.
"But I am unarmed!"

"Perhaps we have found more about the source of the corruption here than expected!" Hadrian steps passed Garm, and Garm's sword, to block the doorway with his shield and survey the interior of the room. "Willa!" he calls back over his shoulder, "know you anything about these folk?" The appearance of the room beyond the doorway is rather shocking, having no almost connection to the relatively unchanged exterior. It has been redecorated as some form of shrine or place of religious worship, albeit with a twisted variation. The furnishings of the room intermingle with fungus and overgrowth in a manner of controlled chaos, as if the corrupted flora were a respected part of the culture, but still required to not get in the way of regular duties. The mushroom-skull symbol is seen prominently throughout the hall on tapestries and metal art pieces. The entire interior is dark, but dimly lit by more glowing blue mushroom caps. Where ever the Gnome's companions have gone, you can catch no sight of them presently. There are open doors and halls nearby that are a likely possibility.

Roll + INT = 4 + 1 + 1 = 6Willa, you attempt to dig deep through your memories to recall some useful details... but wait, what's that sound?! You hear the vicious barking of canines close by, coming from around the side of the building and in your direction! Did the Gnomes release some sort of guard-dogs in defense? The real problem is that the incoming animals seem to be on the outside, while the Gnomes are inside - there are dangers in both directions, and with some of the party in the doorway - half inside and half out - you'll need to make a decision on how to maneuver yourselves. Willa and Lezard, the two most weakly-armored members of the party, are outside and most vulnerable to this new threat! Adventurers, what do you do? Do you retreat inside away from the oncoming animals, with the assumption that the Gnome and his companions are the more important issue? Do you stay outside and fight them off first, at risk of the Gnome getting away? Or will you split the group's attention between both tasks at once? [Caphriel has the Leader's Final Say]

"Hadrian, we should go after the Gnome. He can't get away for what he's done! Ahmvvar can take care of the hounds."
Garm lifts his weapon off the ground and slings it over his shoulder while giving a thumbs up to Ahmvvar.

"I believe it would be better to shut the hounds outside while we explore the the building. Splitting up in this gloom, with madness-inducing mushrooms, is a sure path to defeat. Willa, Lezard, inside, quickly! If we must fight the hounds later, it will be easier to do so when they are limited to approach through the door."

Ahmvvar: In, friends. In! I'll hold the rear.
Ahmvvar steps between the party and the oncoming hounds. While dogs have yet to come within striking distance, Ahmvvar shouts and swings his spear aggressively in an attempt to intimidate them before retreating himself into the tower with his comrades.

All press forth into the room in order to avoid the oncoming threat, with Ahmvvar blocking the door and attempting to intimidate the new foes just as they round the corner and come into sight for the first time. The three "hounds" that rush in from behind the wall startle you with their appearance. At their core, they are some form of wild, forest-dwelling wolf, but their differences cause your stomach to turn. Pieces of flesh and skin have been peeled off of their bodies, exposing patches of muscle and even occasionally bone. They are not unlike decaying corpses after being plucked by birds; yet, the way they move and behave seems too natural for them to be true members of the undead. These creatures are still of their own lives, somehow cursed to continue life in their disturbing, pathetic condition. However pitiable they may be, however, they seem utterly vicious - the come barreling at you with teeth and claws ready to tear you to pieces! Roll + STR = 4 + 3 + 1 = 8Ahmvvar, you shout out and swing your weapon violently, but the visual of the beasts before you cause just the slightest twinge of hesitation in your voice and movements. The wolves are slowed for just a fraction of a second, and as are you, making the initial exchange something of a stalemate. In the shortest moment from now, they will resume their assault on you. You have just enough time to run inside and close the stout door, if you so choose, or you can stand and fight. What do you do?Meanwhile, inside, the lumpy-eyed Gnome is trying to make a break for it! Seeming quite pleased with the wound he delivered to Garm, and yet also understandably terrified at the notion of facing all of the powerful-looking enemies before him single-handedly, the Gnome attempts to run off through a nearby door - more than likely, toward his allies who will give him backup. Adventurers, what do you do?

Ahmvvar spins on his heel and dashes through the doorway after his companions, shutting it behind him and sliding the deadbolt into place.
Ahmvvar: The hounds-- The corruption is on them. Pretty nasty.

[Aren't there windows still, lol?] [There are, but they have glass. In order to enter through those, the wolves would have to smash their bodies through the glass. Not... entirely implausible, given how little they care about injury, but it'd do damage to them and would be at least an extra speed-bump.]

[ He's already fleeing, so what's the worst that could happen?] Roll + CHA = 5 + 3 + 2 = 10At your demand to halt, the Gnome stumbles and hesitates. It is as if your words themselves impacted him like a mighty warhammer. He turns to face you, newfound fear and uncertainty on his disfigured face. His eyes dart in every direction, not sure how to proceed. For a moment, it seems as though he is actually considering the option of peaceable dialog. Alas, it is not to be - a moment later, he turns and resumes his flight, pulling around the corner and down the hallway, out of sight. At the very least, you know you've made him quite shaken indeed - he will be all the easier of an opponent when you next catch back up with him.

Willa takes a few more steps inside, taking advantage of the momentary lull in action to get a better look at the interior. "What is this place? Some sort of cult shrine? A fringe religion? Or the site of some sort of demonological ritual? Lezard, you have experience with the hidden arts. Does this put you in mind of anything you have read about?"

Roll + INT = 3 + 2 + 2 = 7Lezard... Hmm... You can't quite recall the details, such as the name of the religion or deity, but you're pretty sure that there is a belief system held by some that hail from deep underground that would fit what you've seen. The religion is one of nature and wilderness, but of a subterranean nature. Core in its beliefs is a strong focus on duality in all things; not what most philosophers would consider an enlightened usage of the concept, however. This expression of duality leads to some disturbing and twisted conclusions indeed. Instead of seeing things in cycles, such as life begetting death and visa-versa, they believe in experiencing these opposing forces simultaneously. Living while dying. Suffering, and thriving for it. Pleasure through pain. Through these concepts, the group worships concepts such as disease, injury, and madness. Yes, it would certainly put some pieces together if a religious sect like that were responsible for this terrible curse. To them, the place that this area has become would be as a paradise. But even so, the fact that they could actually execute it, and manifest this blighted landscape into being, would be unprecedented. It is but a scant handful of times in an entire age that true believer with that kind of ability would be able to enact the power of his faith on this scale. Perhaps they are the very chosen one or avatar of their deity. Be warned; if you're right about this, Lezard (and you do pride yourself on being right often), your team may be far in over your heads.

Adventurers, you all dart into the hallway after your miniature assailant, with Hadrian leading in front. The corridor is sparsely decorated, with neither original nor corrupted items of much interest. You begin to move forward, when a different Dark Gnome pops out in front of you, brandishing a loaded crossbow - a full-sized, human-made one, mind you - aimed upward at torso-height. This Gnome's appearance is different from the last, though just as repulsive; his enormous nose appears as if one of a larger race had simply been plopped onto his face, and then covered in bulbous sores and warts. But wait, what is this? Behind the group, down at the other end of the hallway, yet another Gnome dips out of a doorway, lugging a crossbow as well. You think this Gnome is a woman, having longer, tangled hair, though her deformities don't make it a simple matter to tell. The skin of her face seems saggy, almost ooze-like, as if it was melting off her skull. The crossbows fire, sending pointy death at you all from both directions. The first bolt heads toward Hadrian, and the second goes straight for... Roll...Garm.
Your instincts kick in, giving you a split moment to react. What do you do?
