Okay, experts may have been a stretch. I did my best, aight?
What did I do? I asked a little question to 14 members of the Yomi community: Who do you think the top 5 "current" Yomi players are? If I didn't ask you this question and you wish you WERE asked, I'm sorry. I DID have some criteria though:
1) Had to be not only playing online Yomi for at least 9 months, but also had to be active on the forums during that time and had to be aware of the Yomi meta, it's players, and the tournament scene.
2) Had to be active on the DRB Platinum Lounge discord. This was for practical reasons, as I am banned from FantasyStrike.com and have no intention of becoming a member of SirlinGames.com.
I prioritized getting opinions of people I thought would be mentioned as candidates for this list, but I asked as many people as I thought would contribute. It also had a lot to do with who was on the discord at the same time I was. If you would like to add your voice to the choir and feel like I should get your input, feel free to look me up on the discord and message me, and I will add your top 5 to the list.
I will start this list with some interesting facts. Exactly thirteen distinct people appeared on the lists that I received. Of these, four people on the list put themselves on the list. In fact, of the people who appeared on this list that I received lists from, only one did not put themselves on it (and they actually did at first, and later changed it). I additionally got information on what sort of metrics people used to arrive at their final 5. Most people started from a baseline of win percentages and historical tournament performances, then layered on a filter of "feel", applying it to who they thought were the most consistent and powerful tournament threats. I will be
ordering the list from most votes received to least. I have NOT included a list in this count, for fear of conflict of interest. Without further ado...
14 votes: deluks917
The only person to appear on every single list received, and always the first person mentioned. A storied tournament history extending back into late v1, deluks has been a force to be reckoned with for a while. Winner of the Topanda invitational, considered to be the tournament with the highest concentration of difficult players, he is a clear favorite and by my estimation deserves every bit of this "honor".
12 votes: Fivec
Voters largely cited Fivec's "solid" play, noting that he makes it deep into every tournament he enters and it always a thorn in everyone's side... Until someone picks Troq and takes him out. In fact, the reason he did not appear on all 13 lists was a weakness to the big bull, but once he picks up a good counterpick we might see him right up there beside deluks at the very top.
11 votes: IamNobody
I didn't really get into the specifics of why I was included on so many of these lists due to awkwardness so I'll put some personal comments here instead. I am honestly surprised to show up on even one of these lists let alone 11. Whenever there are tournaments where predictions can be submitted I'm always put down as losing to Xxcharlie69xX in the second round. How to reconcile these? Who knows?
9 votes: Jengajam
It seems the only reason Jenga was not included in more lists was his relative lack of participation. He only enters 1-2 events a year, and though he consistently does well in them some folks think he needs to put it on the line a bit more often. Otherwise he was mentioned right after deluks in many cases. Getting second in Topanda will do that.
7 votes: mastrblastr
the newest player to the game to appear on any of these lists, mastrblastr has clearly made a splash. Narrowly missing the "rookie of the year" title bestowed by mallorean_thug last year for his Best of the Rest tournament, he has made consistent high finishes since then. Notably his dominance in a very difficult IYL bracket this year put him as a man to watch.
5 votes: ntillerman
The robot hero of Yomi, ntillerman sits comfortably near the top of the pack. With his professed usage of the Nash Equilibrium coupled with random number generators and true belief in the 20XX meta, his presence is always felt in Yomi circles. Even on lists he did not appear on, he was often just beyond, waiting on the word from Skynet to strike.
3 votes: ratxt1 (capitalize your names, people damn)
Always a tough player but rising in estimation recently due to multiple strong showings, gaming compatriot and friend of deluks shows up 3 times. A player who may have been slept on until recently, he is definitely rising in the Yomi ranks.
2 votes: Ryker
Ryker would have had at least two more votes on this list, but some people felt his declaration of intention to quit from Yomi was good enough evidence to keep him from being considered. Others did not have this same evaluation. Some praised his ability to play completely fearlessly, while others commented on his unwillingness to mine the tier list and take advantage of the strongest characters.
2 votes: FenixoftheAshes
Probably largely considered for this list due to his recent win in IYL 4, Fenix sneaks on a few lists. Long considered an above-average player on the cusp, it's clear that some think he has pushed his way over to other side. It appears that he is securing a list to the next Topanda invitational, so we eagerly, wait to,see how he will mix things up in that venue.
2 votes: Thelo
Clearly quite a good player in his own right, the patron saint of online Yomi's clear downfall comes from the very low sample size of only entering the International Yomi League each year. We'd love to see you more, big guy!
1 vote: Mad King
A wildcard of Yomi, Mad King can take out anybody in the game when he is "on". Mentioned and considered by many but only making one final list, he is always someone to be wary of.
1 vote: ClanNatioy
An extremely strong player who hasn't been putting up big numbers lately, Clan is always a threat to keep an eye on.
1 vote "Jonny D" Jonny "Jonny D" D
A relative rookie on this list (and also put in after the original topic was made due to a late response), Jonny is clearly making waves due to some big beatdows.
So there you have it, an ironclad court of public opinion has chosen these players to be the Yomi champions of Tomorrow and beyond. What say you?
