Guess I'll christen this board too.
Hello guys, I am working on FCT, or Four Color Theory. It is an abstract puzzle game based on the mathematical proof the Four Color Theorem. The theorem states that any two-dimensional map can be colored per-region so that no adjacent regions have the same color, using only four colors.
I was inspired by this theorem to make a game where map-like 2D areas are generated procedurally, and it is the player's job to fill it all in with no regions having adjacent colors! Preferably, also doing it quickly. Because the theorem holds for every 2D surface divided into regions, players can know with 100% certainty that no matter how difficult a puzzle feels, it is guaranteed to be solvable despite it being randomly generated.
What do I have so far?
1. I have a working game! It is possible to start it up, get either one or a series of maps presented to you, and solve them. A timer tells you how fast you cleared a map. The maps are generated procedurally using a fairly simple algorithm, but they already look quite varied. It is also possible to write the seed you would like for a map, meaning you can challenge others to the same map as you and try for the fastest time.
2. A very crude menu. It's clickable buttons and the Game Maker-standard popup for entering a seed. Absolutely atrocious, but it's a start.
3. Plans for the future.
My final plans for this game include:
Displaying the seed of the level you're currently playing. That just feels important, so you can re-play something you run into.
Storing results. Obviously. High score lists and all that, y'know?
Multiple game modes! My current ideas are: Go as fast as possible (current mode), Solve it under the time limit, escalating the puzzles and run them all on the same time limit.
Some sort of campaign mode. Think something like what LYNE did. You start the game and you're presented with a few easy puzzles. Maybe these won't even be random (aka set seed for each level). As you play them, more difficult puzzles unlock.
Super goal: Building a server. Creating a player account system. Running daily challenges with leaderboards.
I'm honestly really nervous about posting this. I think I've found an alright basic concept, but I'm not sure if I will be able to execute it as well as I want. I really want this game to be good and I'm unsure if it's something I can do. But, well. At some point, you gotta stop thinking and start making!
If anyone's interested in trying the game, shoot me a message. Also ask questions or anything if that's your thing.
