Hi, this is a thread for discussing cartoons. I'm going to talk about western cartoons, but anime is welcome, too.
So I've been watching Steven Universe. I think I like it at least as much as Avatar, maybe more. It's really good. I also caught up on Friendship is Magic recently. I had stopped watching it about halfway through Season 4 back when it was airing. So I blitzed through S4, 5, and 6 over a few days. That was fun.
I'm also considering watching Samurai Jack. I never caught much of it back when it was airing, but I know it was really good.

Is the new samurai jack still coming out? There was a legend, of a fifth piece being made, called - Samurai Jack Season 5. No idea, I think it wasn't canceled.

I'm pretty sure Samurai Jack is still very much happening, i saw a little interview/feature on it recently.
Also Steven Universe. Like just what the hell, this show is so good. I am a large man, and i cry like a stupid baby almost every episode. It has everything: Magic, Spaceships, Death & Love, Music, Giant Women

I finished watching Season 3 of Steven Universe the other night and it was great. I'm so close to being current I can almost taste it and it's driving me crazy. Probably because I'm about to move so I'll have to wait until I get internet set up before I can become current . . .

Star Wars Rebels is at least as good as at least 50% of Star Wars movies. New season starting strong!

Standard Venture Bro's Disclaimer:
Episode 1 is jaw dropping bad.
The next 3-5 are rough, but there's shades of greatness in there.
Then it gets good and mostly doesn't stop.
Then you find out that people can make multimillion dollar movies faster than they can apparently turn out an episode and you're upset again.

I would say that Venture Bros hits its stride in the later half of Season 1, but it LITERALLY doesn't stop improving from there. Like it's VERY good by end of Season 1 and then every season is even better. I think it's the best television show I've ever seen. Certainly the best western cartoon.

Guys, I was moseying about my library when I noticed that we have Rick and Morty Season 1 available to borrow. I was a little bit surprised, to say the least.
I would like to check out Venture Brothers but my library doesn't have that. 为什么?!

Rick and Morty is great and also is basically the only cartoon I keep current with. That likely ends my contribution to this thread.

Definitely give Rick and Morty a shot. Uh. But I found Rick Potion Number 9, or whatever, really depressing to watch. The rest of the show never got that dark for me though, and I enjoyed it a lot. But yeah. That first one was really rough, and I almost didn't watch any of the rest of the series because of it.

That was the fastest I've ever binge watched an entire season of a show. God damn I'm in love. Critics were saying the first season was bad to average? What the fuck? Can my feeble mind even HANDLE season 2 and 3 then? I thought it was god damn fantastic.

Can my feeble mind even HANDLE season 2 and 3 then? I thought it was god damn fantastic. First half of the first season lacks purpose, because it's basically setup. It's just "lol look at how gross and stupid everyone is" because it's basically luring you into the idea that it's another family guy like show. And then it really really isn't. You've no clue whats in store.

Since everyone loves a good ranking list and to give a broad (but definitely incomplete) overview over western animated shows, I'd like to post my own list (copied from the old FS forum). Note that I am only ranking shows that I have watched since my late teenage years. It is hard to remember shows from my childhood and ranking them is even harder, because some shows that I thought were great back then aren't that good at all if looked at from a more informed/mature perspective.
Great (5/5) Amazing Screw-On Head (pilot only) Avatar: The Last Airbender (seasons 2 and 3) Daria Futurama (once) Gravity Falls Rick and Morty Steven Universe The Legend of Korra (except for season 2)
Good (4/5) Archer Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 1) Batman: The Animated Series Bravest Warriors Castlevania Clerks: The Animated Series Family Guy (seasons 1 – 3) Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends Futurama (now) Gargoyles (first two seasons) Invader Zim Justice League Kim Possible Samurai Jack (first episode) South Park (not the first few seasons) Star vs the Forces of Evil The Awesomes The Oblongs The Simpsons (some newer seasons are probably lower) The Venture Bros. Young Justice
Decent (3/5) Adventure Time Batman Beyond Clone High Drawn Together Family Guy (seasons 4 – 5) Moonbeam City My little Pony: Friendship is Magic Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja South Park (first few seasons) Star Wars: The Clone Wars Teen Titans Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes The Batman (season 3) The Boondocks The Legend of Korra (season 2) The Spectacular Spider-Man Total Drama (Island, World Tour, All-Stars and Pahkitev Island) Total Drama presents: The Ridonculous Race Voltron: Legendary Defender Wolverine and the X-Men X-Men: Evolution
Weak (2/5) Axe Cop Family Guy (other seasons) Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes Samurai Jack (the next dozen episodes after the first one) Super Jail The Batman (other seasons) The Penguins of Madascar The Tick Total Drama (Action and Revenge of the Island) Ugly Americans X-Men
Bad (1/5) American Dad (first season) Avengers Assemble Hulk and the Agents of SMASH Teen Titans Go! The Cleveland Show Ultimate Spider-Man
Ok, there are probably a few placements that you will disagree with. And I cheated a bit with Amazing Screw-On Head: Since the show never got produced, the pilot episode is more like a short animated movie than a full show. Still, it was initially planned to become a complete series and it is just too good not to mention. One last observation on super hero shows: I am more of a Marvel fanboy, but a lot of the DC shows are better than the Marvel shows. And the good Marvel shows (The Avengers and Spectacular Spider-Man) get canceled and are replaced with far inferior shows...

Good: A whole bunch of new Steven Universe episodes (featuring lots of singing and crying)! Bad: Almost no Lapis in those episodes!
I am taking a break from anime and am currently watching the third season of Star Wars - Rebels. Having just watched Rogue One might have something to do with doing so, too.

So, the start of the new Steven Universe season? Wow.
Also, a million curses for teasing me with a single new episode of Rick and Morty, then having me wait months for the reast of the season.

I haven't been keeping up with SU much. Last episode I saw was Rocknaldo. I should get back into it for sure.
New Samurai Jack was really good for the first few episodes, but weak for most of the rest of the season.

That Castlevania miniseries was pretty good. I hope it gets a second season at one point. It is written by an English guy (Warren Ellis), produced by an American company, set in Romania and based on a Japanese IP. That is pretty international. When I first heard about it, I thought it would be an anime, but since it was neither written nor produced in Japan, I guess it is a cartoon after all. (Insert useless discussion and definition about the difference between anime and cartoon.) ... Third season of Rick and Morty is starting continuing soon. Yay! Same with the third season of Star vs the Forces of Evil. Which took a few episodes to grow on me, but which I am now a fan of. The last season of Archer was... something different. I find it fascinating how they've been changing premise and setting for the last few seasons. Keeps the show fresh. It was getting a bit repetitive after the fourth or fifth season. Seems like they recognized this. Has anyone seen Miraculous Ladybug? If I remember correctly, @specs and one or two others liked it. I still find the 3D animation style jarring after falling in love with the original promotional video. Still salty about that style change.

The first (double) episode of the DuckTales reboot has aired and it's pretty decent.
I'm probably not gonna follow it too closely, but it's good to see another modern quality cartoon on kids' channels again. It got some good chuckles out of me though.

Wait? What? How? A new DuckTales? Why didn't I know about this? I loved DuckTales as a kid, but (re)watching it a few years ago, it has visibly aged. A modern reboot with the same writing quality and heart as the old show could turn out quite well.

I like the look (but not the dub) of Villanos. I think it would be hard to make a show with full 20 minutes episodes out of it, but I'd like to see more of it in a shorter format. Maybe a bunch of 5-6 minute episodes like Brave Warriors did? Legend Quest also has me somewhat interested. Boy who sees ghosts? Nothing new. But this one comes from a Mexican point of view! And the new DuckTales looks neat. I definitely have to check that one out.

I like your list Star Slayer. I pretty much agree with your placement of the shows I've seen. Have you ever seen the 2003 Ninja Turtles? It definitely my favorite version of the show, especially after going back and reading some of the comics and seeing how closely the show followed them.
Also I've never watched Steven Universe. I guess maybe I should.

So of late I have particularly enjoyed season three of Rick and Morty, season four of Bojack Horseman and I've just finished season one of Neo Yokio. This latter was a show I was fully prepared to hate and the characters are so cliched and tropey... until I was a couple of episodes in and saw that the characters were leaning so hard into those tropes that they were almost coming out the other side. So it was a bit painful to start with but by the end I was totally onboard.
Also Little Witch Academia, as suggested by Star Slayer, which was brilliant.

(Never watched the 80s cartoon, even though I was in elementary school age back then, probably making me the main target audience.) I can see Steven Universe not being a slam-dunk for everyone. And if you give it a try, you should watch at least a full dozen of the 10-minute episodes. It has a kinda slow start, but soon the great worldbuilding comes through and you get into the characters and general atmosphere. Little Witch Academia has been one of the most enjoyable shows for me this year. It has the lovable characters, inventiveness and general enjoyability of a good Pixar movie. Coupled with colorful 2D animation that you just have to love.

I am a very big Ninja Turtles fan. I did watch the 80s show when I was younger and it is what made me a fan, but I couldn't recommend it now even for ironic or historical viewing. I heard the CG one just ended and they are starting another hand drawn version. It is supposed to have a lighter more youthful tone than the CG series, which already has a fairly light youthful tone. Anyway, I have to stop myself before I type all night about how much I like them.
I will try to sit down and watch Little Witch Academia with my wife.

Hm, I feel like I could have known that you are a Ninja Turtle fan. As if there was a subtle hint or something. I watched the whole first season of the CG one. The writing was mostly good, but the CG look didn't appeal to me. I would have continued if it was in traditional 2D animation. Like the 2003 show. From that, I only watched that time / dimension traveling movie. Forgot the name. Where they meet their different incarnations, like the goofy 80s turtles. That had some really good jokes. Fun fact: In the mid-80s to late 90s, Germany was hit by a "media violence is corrupting our children" scare, leading to a lot of censorship especially in videogames. It also let to a different title for the turtles: They were called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles here, because ninjas are assassins and we can't have our children watch a cartoon where the protagonists are related to professional murderers. (Though in looking it up, it seems that this censorship actually originated in the UK and was only copied by Germany?)

You know, I totally didn't even think about my avatar, it's just been there for so long that I don't notice it anymore. The name of the movie you saw was Turtles Forever. They used it as an end for the 2003 series, but it was also the 20th or 25th anniversary. I like it a lot. It does a good job of showing the differences between the series in an entertaining way. As much as I enjoy the turtles interactions with themselves, I think I enjoy the 80's Shredder meeting someone who is competent and actually evil. The CG look of the 2013 grew on me but wouldn't be my first choice. Splinter was also huge which felt weird. (Even though I assume this was to make him seem more parental). The show started strong but got kind of mutant-of-the-week mode for a while. I stopped somewhere towards the end of the second season. Now that it is over though, I kind of want to go back and see how they handled the City at War arc. I've heard that before about the Hero turtles. It's just always felt odd to me because ninja doesn't seem like that violent of a word to me. Certainly not worse than all kinds of other names for fighters from around the world. Would Viking Turtles have been censored? There are a couple of hilariously bad episodes from Japan that I think only exist to market some toys. The turtles have some crystals that turn them into super mutants and they all join together like Voltron/Power Ranger/etc. It's so bad I don't want to tell you to watch them, but if you haven't seen them: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL7UefNuvX8What I really mean by all of this is that it is worth your time to watch through more of the 2003 series. Not just Star Slayer, anybody who reads this.
