Ooooh, I'd be super interested in both Runes or Yijing (my Mandarin snobbery comes to the fore!). I'm curious how you cast your hexagrams for the Yijing. Do you use coins or some other method? As for Runes, I know next to nothing about that. They're Nordic in origin, yes? For hexagrams ill use whatever is at hand, the sticks method is still fresh for me but i guess its considered the most rigorous-- coins are great and quick. One of my I Ching guidebooks described and old-timey scholar in china who would draw hexagrams from his observations on the natural world, i.e. cherry petals falling, two sparrows fighting, cloud patterns etc. Yeah, the runes are essentially the Norse alphabet but they were widely used across a lot of europe before romanization. The letters themselves each have meanings referencing common symbols and concepts from everyday life in that era. There are basically endless ways to generate readings, and interpretation is strongly based on the symbols in combination. #doReadsReal ??

All of them? I was certain you wouldn't care for the Lunatic Tarot or the Darkana Tarot. I thought that maybe you'd think Shadowscapes was beautiful and I thought there was about a 70% chance you'd like Tarot of the Magical Forest since there's no departure from the the traditional RW symbolism. The art is just more beautiful (in my opinion) and they replaced all the humans with adorable animals. All these planets and their houses. Sounds like they could use a little help with that. I think they're all very beautiful! As art pieces they're really nice to look at! I just feel like they're not as evocative as the Rider Waite deck, in the sense that they give me less to work with when I'm trying to construct a narrative. They're too "smooth" looking in a way that, I feel, makes them harder to interpret in a lot of different ways.
Like pareidolia, where you see patterns in cliff faces or clouds or whatever, and they look like human faces or other familiar objects and shapes. I feel like Rider Waite is just way better at giving a diversity of patterns to play with than any other deck I've seen. Like the cyberpunk deck is really cool looking, for example, but cyberpunk is a genre that has its basis in a bunch of other forms - the noir, the detective story, upstairs/downstairs dramas, etc. The tropes and figures are all of a very certain aesthetic. Rider Waite feels much more archetypal, in a way I find more satisfying and flexible; equally able to reflect or address modern life, a D&D game, or a sci-fi story.
imo ymmv etc.
That's an interesting perspective! I view various Rider Waite decks very similarly to how I view fiction. Namely, there are no new ideas under the sun. Everything is a variation of some key archetypes. Because of this, the basic story of Rider Waite is appealing, but I connect more to its variations. The change in perspective is more illuminating to me. It's almost too familiar so I find the changes and the counterpoints to be thrilling, especially when it's pulling from alternative sources. So what I'm really saying is that Tarot is super cool in the way it constructs and communicates stories and people are attracted to and respond differently to those stories. #ballers

TRIPLE POSTING. Tarot is fantastic for shifting perspective and possibly getting people to sit and think. I don't generally view it in a super magical/oracular way. I like Tarot because I can easily use it as a way to get to know someone and I can help people work through issues. Sometimes people don't know how to start hard conversations, especially if they feel vulnerable, but when you create a story/narrative with Tarot cards, they now have a framework and they can use that. Furthermore, because Tarot is somewhat nebulous, it can open up different ways of thinking about things and get people out of certain ruts. Sidestory: When I was in college, I had a roommate who was studying music education and smoking a lot of pot. He was a nice enough fellow, especially since he didn't smoke in our room. One evening, I was sorting through my Tarot cards and he had a fellow music education student over. She saw me sorting through my cards and asked, "Are those Tarot cards?" I told her, "Yes. Would you like a reading?" She responded, "No, I can't. I'm Catholic." I replied "I don't think it's a conflict bec-" and then she cuts me off, says, "Okay," and sits down for a reading. All I could think was, "Not that dedicated to Catholicism, are you?" =TRIPLE WINNING, at least according to Kraetyz An interesting view on tarot for sure. I think for a lot of people who do take these things as "gospel" so to speak, it maybe is just them working through what they actually want/have. I mean if you think something is fated to be/not to be its easier to put efforts into making it happen / getting over it not happening. Remind me, if we ever meet, to request a reading from you. Haha I know a lot of people who do religion like in that story. In someways that's probably the healthier way to be about religion imo, having seen a more fundamentalist side. Even though "these supernatural things I believe in are real" combined with "my faith is really nominal" don't really make any logical sense. Yeah, fundamentalism can be terrifying. I read a book called Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer and that was quite the adventure into fundamentalist Mormonism. If, for whatever reason, I happen to be in Glasgow or you in Rock Island, Illinois, I would gladly give you a Tarot reading followed by some Yomi events.

Hey all I don't know if a lot of you guys have seen this thread, but I started a Play By Forum of World Wide Wrestling RPG. I'm mainly just seeing if there's interest in starting it! So yeah if you saw it sorry for the spam, but figured I'd let you guys know! John Cena SimulatorIt's more narrative based than mechanics based than most RPGs and uses the Apocalypse World engine for dice rolls and such. Also there's no cap on the roster, but for right now the cap for episodes is 6. (If you're not booked you can still do run-ins/promos/be an announcer/etc.) But yeah if you're interested check it out. You don't have to be a big wrestling fan to play either. It's episodic in nature so yeah if you only want to try it and leave you can! Tagged people that might be interested. copper8642 Mystic Deadman Thanks!

I've never thought of using Tarot cards for narrative generation, interesting. As a regular GM I might pick up a set for this express purpose. I think I perhaps have an odd position on such things. I've long had a fascination with superstition/supernatural lore and at one time was quite religious; however I'm also a highly qualified physicist and find myself becoming more of a hardcore skeptic as I get older. My training in critical thinking and the scientific method definitely contributed to my crisis of faith and eventual rejection of religion (though a major factor was also the church leaders being confirmed arseholes). I guess secretly I'd quite like something supernatural to be real (since it would revolutionize so much of human thought) but I am almost certain that none of it is. IMO the tarot can easily be approached through an esoteric lens rather than an occult lens. (Yes, there's a difference.) Since the tarot is comprised of multiple narratives (every suit, as I understand it, is often portrayed with a progression of narrative) and each arcana has a unique meaning, it's a great way of self-reflection, of finding narrative and structure in your own life. As a skeptic, you could easily see it as a way to weaponize apophenia to give yourself a fresh perspective on things. (I've come to this view of the tarot from a twofold perspective: one, from a background in critical thinking and analysis, and two, from a religious background that holds it to be spiritually hazardous to attempt rogue divination, as it were. Fortunately for me, there's a ton to tarot that has nothing to do with divination; as far as I know, that's a more recent development. Also, 95% of present US media depictions get it wrong. From what I know, the Persona series probably gets it the closest.) The only deck I own is the Avalon Tarot, which is pretty spiffy, although it relying on an existing story can tend to stymie freer interpretation of the narratives. The art is absolutely wonderful, though. Also, fun trivia, one day a few of my friends and myself went through and discussed which Major Arcana would be associated with us. Largely because my life has largely been associated with change and adaptation, we finally settled on Death for me--which is less scary than it might seem! (And because they're huge Persona fans, it was mostly a "what would your Persona be?" sort of thing. We eventually decided that my Persona would be Moses.)

I'm not certain about the divination aspect of tarot. From what I've read, that's been a pretty longstanding association/tradition but I will admit I've never bothered to really dig into that since it doesn't make a difference to me.
As for a card from the major arcana that best personifies me, it's probably either the Devil or the Hierophant.

I am! It's going much better now that I'm no longer struggling with a cold and also the conviction that everything is going to fall through because of my ignorance and inability to adult! I'm actually buying the house I'm living in with my parents, and they're moving out once their new house is fully renovated. It's basically amazing! My house will be filled with board games, friendship, and nachos, fyi.

I guess I just like rice and beans more than I like nacho cheese mysticjuicerThat warm pile of rice topped with a mixture of black beans, diced tomatoes, diced green chilis and corn before a generous heaping of shredded cheese, salsa and sour cream is applied to the very top. On a good day you add some guacamole before you open your bag of tortilla chips and dig in. Also sometimes you make some taco meat I guess, but that requires planning because thawing my frozen ground beef in the microwave makes it less good than if I had just taken it out of the freezer the day before.

Microwaving taco meat? Just cook it on the stove, fool!
I rarely make nachos. If I'm going to go to that effort, I'm just going to make tacos instead. Actually, that sounds really good. I might pick up taco stuff later. Gonna get a couple of habaneros to combine with some chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and cook into my taco meat since that's approaching the appropriate level of spice and deliciousness.

Microwaving taco meat? Just cook it on the stove, fool! nonono using the microwave to thaw a solid frozen hunk of ground beef. I buy in bulk and freeze it because that's waaaaay cheaper. RE:Yomi I've found that I've lost all motivation to hang out in yomi to find people so the only yomi I've played is tournament yomi. It's tons of fun but for me it's not worth launching the steam client to see if people are online because there are just less people floating around and the steam client isn't as natural to just have open while I do other things. I do think I'm avoiding sirlin stuff a little bit too though. I'm grumpy with him so I don't want to give him my money but I do like yomi a lot. I was going to purchase some amount of physical yomi via some store credit at a nerd shop but opted not to in the end because I'm grumpy at sirlin. Though I also have a million other board game related things I want so it was an easy choice to not buy yomi again lol

Yeah, my QM series has really slowed down because I'm really finding it hard to actually get games. I think I want to play more, but tournament Yomi is a bit more stressful with additional pressure to perform, and just the admin overhead of having to get it scheduled in advance. That said, I had a fun idea for a tournament to run, but the great schism of the community into 2/3 different places makes it really annoying to decide where to host it

Post by flagrantangles on Oct 19, 2016 12:52:25 GMT 1
Yeah, the lack of QM is upsetting but it affects me less than others since I never have significant opportunities to play anyway. As for your tournament idea, host it here and snipe people from the SG forums and discord! That's what I did. But Fraa! You can cook/thaw beef on the stove, there's no need to also involve a microwave!

But Fraa! You can cook/thaw beef on the stove, there's no need to also involve a microwave! I mean, my answer that you overlooked is to not include taco meat if I forgot to thaw out ground beef Though the microwave thaws the ground beef faster and cooking in my apartment is typically for dinner and done by two people who are rather hungry because they don't get off work until latish. Still, it's more likely that I just skip the meat there. I hope you aren't also insulted that I use the microwave to thaw out chicken breasts sometimes
