Alright, I think we're in good shape to begin the Question and Answer Section! I'm going to ask each of you a number of questions. This will take place over a few rounds, and have a few questions per round. There is no timing on this - answer each round of questions at your earliest convenience. Please answer them truthfully and thoughtfully. Keep in mind that while most of the questions will be about your own character, there will be some questions about other characters - perhaps something they themselves are not aware of. Carefully read the questions, and do not assume it is a mistake if I ask you about someone other than yourself. Attempt to answer each question separately, even if the same section of backstory is relevant to multiple questions. Question and Answer: Round 1 -The PastAhmvvar- Ahmvvar, what is the story behind your ornate spear?
- Ahmvvar, who was your closest family growing up?
- Ahmvvar, what act of violence (for good or ill) most inspired you to go down your current path?
Hadrian- Hadrian, who did you consider a positive role-model growing up?
- Hadrian, what event once tested your faith?
- Hadrian, what family member have you had the most conflict with over the years?
Lezard Valeth- Lezard, what was the magical event you once witnessed that impacted you the most emotionally (fear, excitement, etc)
- Lezard, what nickname did others once give you? How did you feel about it?
- Lezard, how do those closest to you feel about your magical path?
Garm- Garm, what showy action did you once perform in public that you are most proud of?
- Garm, what showy action landed you in the most trouble and caused you to need to flee?
- Garm, who have you met on your travels that you wish you had the opportunity to get to know better?
Willa- Willa, who was the most influential person in your life regarding your pursuit of being a bard?
- Willa, what has been the greatest tale you've witnessed thus far first-hand?
- Willa, what is the most disturbing or frightening tale you've heard?

Question and Answer: Round 1 -The PastWilla- Willa, who was the most influential person in your life regarding your pursuit of being a bard?
- Willa, what has been the greatest tale you've witnessed thus far first-hand?
- Willa, what is the most disturbing or frightening tale you've heard?
- My father, who left this mandolin behind when he passed. He was always disappointed not to have had a son to carry on the long line of bards in the family. I wanted to live up to his hopes, but I don't think he was ever really satisfied with me.
- For all the adventures I've tagged along with so far, I'm yet to see much that thrilling. I was with Lord Benfric when he managed to slay that stag he'd spent half the season hunting, but I hope to see something truly remarkable soon if I am to add to the song cycles of the Seekers.
- We've all heard the stories sung round every hearth, but when you come from a background like mine you really do hear a lot that aren't so well known. The creepiest, or at least the one that stuck with me the longest, I only heard once from my grandfather. It told the story of three brave adventurers who succeeded in their quest to return a lost treasure from the Caves of Andungel in the far West, but at the cost of their desires to own anything else. It ended with each of them murdering their own families and then each other in their desperation to keep the artifact. The idea that items exist which can twist our minds so much is really something I'd rather not have to deal with in this world.

- Garm, what showy action did you once perform in public that you are most proud of?
Garm Log, day 543: "After weeks of waiting, he's finally arrived. Tugog Man-Breaker, the great-orc who has split the skulls of even the strongest of warriors in these lands. I've been training for this battle for so long. He has accepted my challenge in front of the gathered crowd of anxious towns people. The duel raged for over an hour. The stories the villagers told of his strength were no exaggeration. His blows were mighty enough to fell a tree, and he was relentless. Many times, I worried that I would be crushed under the sheer weight of his massive cleaver. However, his technique was reckless and sloppy. The art passed down to me was far superior, and even with his great strength he ultimately proved no match for a true blademaster. In the final moments of the fight, I assaulted him with a series of heavy slashes. First from the left, then from the right, and finally from above. The final slash bore down into his cleaver and shattered it in two. He immediately yielded and called for mercy. As I turned to the villagers to bow and receive their applause, I felt a sharp pain in my side. The scum had taken a shard of his cleaver and jabbed it into my side! He would have easily ended me there, had the villagers not turned on him in outrage and torn him limb from limb. The champion fights for his people, and they for him." - Garm, what showy action landed you in the most trouble and caused you to need to flee?
Garm Log, day 290: "Today, the coastal town I've been training in for the last few weeks was raided by a large group of goblins. By my count, no less than thirty of the vermin swarmed the gates. I quickly called the brave men of the town to action. At first, I made a boisterous display of dispatching a few of the goblin's numbers, but I realized the futility of fighting the horde head-on. So, I began to scour the battlefield for their leader. As it happened, he was not difficult to identify: He stood a head above the rest of the goblins, wielding a deadly serrated blade and covered in fine leathers. I quickly made my plan. Climbing a parapet, I leaped from the top of the gate, clearing the throng of goblins to land just short of their leader. I used the universal language of combat to issue a challenge to him in front of his minions, with his honor at stake. I took a dueling stance, prepared to face my foe in formal combat. However, to my shock, I was set upon from all sides! First, a club to the knee from one of the goblins behind me brought me down, followed by a shiv to the shoulder from a different goblin to my side. After knocking two of the smaller goblins surrounding me aside, I was able to flee to the nearby woods. It seems the lead goblin wasn't interested in an honorable duel after all. I hope that town is okay." - Garm, who have you met on your travels that you wish you had the opportunity to get to know better?
Garm Log, day 315: "...They call him Jayesh. I've heard many tales of his prowess, but the details are inconsistent and fanciful. Clearly, he's a figure surrounded in much myth. None the less, there is always some truth behind legend. He may prove to be a worthy rival to test my art against! I must seek him out." Garm Log, day 358: "...I saw him today, at the markets. He didn't carry himself as a warrior should, and had no weapon. I approached him, prepared to issue a formal challenge to test his strength. As I weaved through the crowd to reach him, however, he disappeared. Is he too scared to fight me?" Garm Log, day 362: "On the road to the next port, I came across a very strange sight. It was the corpse of a giant! The farmers tell me that the giant had been terrorizing them for some time, until Jayesh came through just a day ago. They say he slew the giant with a single blow! He will make a fine rival..."

Hadrian, who did you consider a positive role-model growing up? "I had no shortage of positive role models in my youth. My father, my uncles, the captain of the guard. All of them were fine men, fit to stand before Ethar and recount their deeds. But it is my mother that brought order to our household during my father's long journies. She educated my siblings and I in the importance of respect and obedience, and she maintained the records of a merchantile empire. A small one, admittedly. She, I believe, is one of Ethar's favored. Surely any so devoted to maintaining the rule of law must be. I aspire to achieve her calm authority in the face of chaos." Hadrian, what event once tested your faith? "You dare! I have smote better men than you for such an insult! Aye, and women too. Oh, I will tell. You have earned that. But that you ask this of me, of all things. Pah! After this, I consider all debts between us paid. And if you speak of this to anyone, I shall smite you as well. Law is what divides humans from the lesser races - the orcs, the goblins, whathaveyou. You know this, but you do not understand it. Not like I do. Here, in the southern lands, you take much for granted. The application of the law is unequal, but the law is fair. Ethar has seen to that. To the west, there are lands where the rich and powerful keep men as slaves. They are forced to labor, and see no recompense but meager lodgings, and scant food. Women are kept as concubines. The peasantry are slain at the whims of the nobility. And yet, those are their laws. I have traveled there, and seen it. The west is an unforgiving land, and the frontier with the monster-infested wilds requires a certain measure of harshness. You are horrified. So too was I, in my first journey there. The details are irrelevant to you, and I shall not share them. Suffice it to say that I discovered the plottings of an organization of slaves, carefully hidden from their masters. A plot to murder in cold blood the King, and his closest advisors. I could have aided it. Ethar's Precepts supercede any law of this world, after all. But I prayed to Ethar for guidance, and He bade me stay my hand. I asked why, and He bade me trust him. I asked how He could do such a thing, and He told me it was right. All night and the next day, I spent in communion with Ethar. At least, He directed me to report what I had found to the King. I did so, and at his behest I lead a company of his guards to the conspiracy. I struck them down myself, men and women whom I had broken bread with, and heard the plight of. Though I wept to do so, I slew their leaders and their assassins both. And I prayed again, to ask Ethar why I must do this thing. He bade me wait. And the next day, as night fell, riders approached the capital. A horde of orcs out of the wastes, come to ravage the lands of men! Had the conspiracy succeeded, the orcs would have come upon a kingdom in disarray, an army decapitated. They would have swept through the western kingdoms and reached the southlands. So do not question my faith in Ethar. For He sees more than we do, and He knows well the value of the preservation of order, even when the cost is dear. And He has promised me that when the time is right, that His Precepts shall be brought to the all of the lands of men, and beyond. And by His grace, it shall be my sword that brings His justice to those who turn the law to their own benefit!" Hadrian, what family member have you had the most conflict with over the years? "A trivial question. My family, as I, were raised to respect those in positions of authority, and their commands. My father did not understand, at first, my calling. He had wished me to follow in his footsteps as caravan master. But Ethar's mark is upon me, for all to see. No, I think if any it would be my Uncle. My mother's youngest brother. I suspect, although I have no proof, that he is jealous that I was chosen, and his son was not. Uncle Garth had always seen the best of his son, and none of his flaws. Now, he is embittered. Each time Ethar's work brings me to my family's home, I find he has spoken ill of me in my absence, calling me an unfaithful son, a vagabond, or worse. It is true that Ethar does not have much use for the trappings of wealth, and thus neither do I. And he seeks to entrap me in snares of logic and rhetoric before our gathered family. But he acts within the law and the Precepts, although he may skirt them at times. He is a petty man, all told, but not an evil one, and I do not allow him to trouble my thoughts during my travels, can I prevent it."

Lezard Valeth- Lezard, what was the magical event you once witnessed that impacted you the most emotionally (fear, excitement, etc)
- Lezard, what nickname did others once give you? How did you feel about it?
- Lezard, how do those closest to you feel about your magical path?
- Divine vision, love
- "Freak," mostly indifferent
- Mostly fear or apprehension
"A more violent reaction than anticipated, but, such is to be expected while tempting the limits of nature. As life faded from this frame she appeared before me, the battle maiden, Valkyrie. I suppose you could say it was love at first sight. No! This was not the first time I'd lived this experience! As a struggled to reach my lady love memories of my future washed me away. Rejected by death, denied the Maiden's embrace, if she refused to have me perhaps I could have her!" Lezard was nearly killed by an alchemic accident in adolescence. While dying he claims to have witnessed a Goddess with whom he fell deeply in love, although it's likely that the prospect of taming a Goddess simply satisfies his narcissism and it's this satisfaction that he's truly in love with. Lezard believes he's lived the same life multiple times which may or may not be accurate. Regardless of what actually happened, Lezard gained the capacity for magic, which he claims to derive from memories he's not yet lived. While most people doubt his claims, the results are harder to dismiss. Most accept that something profound happened, but differ wildly in their theories. Before this event, Lezard was a reserved, frail child with a thirst for knowledge. Most somewhat pitied him. Although he wasn't particularly gifted, his ambition granted him entry to a prestigious academy where he studied alchemy. After this event he became sickened by madness. "My 'peers' often call me a freak. I do not concern myself with their trivial opinions. While they mock me in public, they seek my answers in private. They need only to recognize my superiority! After all, my generosity is limitless!"

Ahmvvar, what is the story behind your ornate spear?Ahmvvar, who was your closest family growing up? Ahmvvar, what act of violence (for good or ill) most inspired you to go down your current path?
My people live and travel in bands of roughly twenty or thirty men and women, along with their children and livestock.
Family heads each carry an emblem of office, marking their place as a band elder. This spear stands as my emblem. .
When the spear breaks it will join the dust of the Earth and my brothers and I will forge it anew. We do not hold to fetishes for ancient relics, but we rally around the Ram as it resides in our hearts.
Myself and my younger brothers were raised by our eldest brother Thosvvir. Dhrowvvar and Flakvvor, the twins, have kind and clever souls and though brave, not the stuff of warriors. Thosvvir though, had my strength and patience as well as the twins' quick minds. They say he breathed as the best of our honoured parents risen again. He taught us all we know of herding, fighting, and fair governance. He lives still, but has taken up some grave task and has not haunted our homeland for years now past.
When I was a small boy, a holy man came to our hills from the far cities. He bade us to become learned from his Scrolls and to join his Faith. Our High Council of Aunts and Uncles sent him back the way he came. A month later he returned with two strong men in shining armour bearing vicious swords to force the issue. Thosvvir broke their shields and swatted aside their blades with his spear, yet he showed them mercy as they fled. Such harassment has not befallen our people since that time.
However, I now sojourn far from home and many moons gone I have accepted the mission as an Envoy into the realm of cities and kingdoms so that my people may yet not become buried in the past.

Time for the next round of questions. Keep in mind that some questions may be intended as meta-game knowledge, and thus may not be appropriate to answer in-character. I have framed these questions differently by not referring to your character by name when asking them. Also keep in mind when filling in bonds that they can very much be "one-way" relationships. If Person A forms a bond with Person B, it is more than likely true that both people know each other, but Person B may not necessarily have a strong opinion back toward Person A and thus not have a reciprocating bond (though they might). As seen in the example bonds, they also do not need to necessarily be positive relationships - one can have a bond of mistrust or pity, for example. Question and Answer: Round 2 -The Present Ahmvvar- Ahmvvar, what has motivated you to venture forth away from your people recently?
- Ahmvvar, what location have you visited recently that you've become very fond of?
- Ahmvvar, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
- Who has Willa inspired in a life-changing way without even realizing it?
Hadrian- Hadrian, what is the most recent deed you have accomplished in the name of Ethar?
- Hadrian, what act of injustice or disorder exists in this world today that you cannot stand?
- Hadrian, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
- What monstrous opponent has a surprisingly long memory for their previous encounter with Garm?
Lezard- Lezard, what magical effect or ability that you've heard of recently has piqued your curiosity?
- Lezard, you seem to carry a lot of books around with you. What book have you enjoyed reading the most purely for leisure?
- Lezard, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
- What is one important secret that Hadrian does not know about his Uncle Garth?
Garm- Garm, have your battles left you with any noticeable scars? Do you wear them proudly or try to conceal them?
- Garm, what glorious achievement do you dream of accomplishing in your travels?
- Garm, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
- Who has a personal grudge against Lezard that goes beyond a simple prejudice of his magical abilities?
Willa- Willa, what more can you tell us about The Seekers?
- Willa, is there any romantic interest in your life?
- Willa, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
- What frightening truth have some of Ahmvvar's brothers been keeping from him all these years?

Ahmvvar, what has motivated you to venture forth away from your people recently?
I had preferred to stay home, tend my flock and train my nephews in stave and spear, but the other elders of the band had different plans for me.
Indeed, this is not my first journey away from my people's lands. We commonly send out men and women to neighbouring or distant places for trade as well as to learn the state of the world that surrounds us. We make our living as crafters and herdsmen, but setting out as an Envoy is the dream of many of our youths.
Ahmvvar, what location have you visited recently that you've become very fond of?
I had business in a large trade settlement not far from here, but when i tired of the bustle I continued north. Here I came upon a smaller lake, but very deep and cool and dark. In the middle of the lake a steep red cliff jutt out from the depths.
I swam to the island-cliff, and ascended its rocky walls. I found near the top two mountain springs: one cool and fresh, the other as hot as fresh tea and pungent like onion. Among these springs, and the greenery surrounding them I rested for several days. It had been a long while since I'd felt so refreshed and heartened. It cheers me even still to speak of it.
Ahmvvar, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
(Hadrian owes me his life whether he admits it or not)
The pious warrior Hadrian, I have indeed encountered before. While in passage across the Amber Sea his cabin was next to mine and we often took meals at the same table. But never spoke much beyond courtesies.
Each day of the journey he spoke a sermon to the crew and passengers (any who would listen) in the ship's common room. I was surprised by the worldliness and relative utility of his faith, concerned mainly with ethics and the rule of law. By his sigils I knew he was not of the same faith as those who had violated my people years before but nonetheless I am wary of these 'religious types'.
Let us say I ...respect his dedication. Regardless of any prejudice I carry, I sat to hear his speeches -- how better to learn about these strange folk of wall and castle than through their faith. Set in his ways, and proud, Hadrian's talks caused many of the passengers to bristle and take offense. I can only presume they felt as set in their beliefs as he in his.
One night, after sermonizing Hadrian retreated to meditate or contemplate (i'm unsure which). And a nearby table of vicious looking pilgrims began to speak openly of their desire to cast him into the sea upon which we sailed. I preferred to not see this come to pass, and so I sat at their table with a bag of tiles, a flagon of rum, and a pipe brimming with calming herbs.
Hadrian doubtless would not approve, but after gambling, drinking, and smoking the night to dawn the brigands were no longer up to the task of lynching anyone.
Who has Willa inspired in a life-changing way without even realizing it?
Around the fire, Willa plucked the strings of her music box. Most paid her no mind, a pair of young lovers sat hand in hand tapping their feet to the song's rythm, and a few of the peasants cast her queer looks.
Willa's song was a savage account of the mythic ancient hero Bonmallet, and how he had shattered the demon's steel fortress into a thousand thousand splinters. Each splinter became a sword, wielded by the first generation of our world's heroes to protect those in need, and to cut a path for the light of wisdom.
After everyone had retired from the fire, Willa gathered her gear and parchments and made way for her camp. A lone shape remained. A small boy, an orphan lingered among the shadows of the nearby wood. The song had awoken something in him. The fire that burns in the eyes of every great warrior.

Hadrian, what is the most recent deed you have accomplished in the name of Ethar? "What brings me here? Hah! Have no fear, my good man. Nothing in this village has warranted the attention of Ethar's chosen Justicar. I am simply passing through on my way home from the kingdom of Zar. Ethar guided me there to mediate a dispute over a marriage and treaty between the King of Zar and their neighbor to the north, the Kearnean Empire. Ah, I see you have heard of them. I will speak no ill of them. Their reputation speaks for itself. I shall not bore you with the details. It was a matter of the terms of the contract. King Alfric was concerned that Kearn would use its position controlling trade routes to reneg on their promises, and so I found my way there. It is not as glamorous as slaying monster, no, but maintaining the peace of nations is important work, as well. And just between you and I, a fortnight of good food and a comfortable bed is not an unwelcome quest to undertake." Hadrian, what act of injustice or disorder exists in this world today that you cannot stand? "The practices of the western kingdoms are a blight upon the good name of civilization. In particular, King Lionel holds a decadent court while his people starve and die to the depradations of monsters. Oh, he holds his border secure, but only against serious incursions. He finds patrols against wandering bands of marauders too costly to maintain. I have sworn that I shall see him brought low. Ethar's Precepts apply equally to all, be they the mightiest of kings or the lowliest of beggars. It will be my pleasure to teach Lionel this truth." Hadrian, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? "One of the most memorable experiences I have ever has is an encounter with a swordsman by the name of Garm. He is a talented swordsman by any accounting, and amongst the most honorable of men I have had the pleasure to know. We fought together against the Orcish Horde that threatened these lands not three years past. I did not see it myself, but Garm's duelk against the Tugog in defense of a village is no mean feat. Over ale, he told me once of an attempt to duel a goblin. Yes, Garm is a noble warrior, who holds to his code of honor no matter the circumstances. I respect that." What monstrous opponent has a surprisingly long memory for their previous encounter with Garm? There are few monsters that have fought Garm in a duel and survived. Certainly none that were unwilling to flee from him. But not all foes are honorable. Among those he fought was an Orc by the name of Inkathu. Inkathu was once an aspirant to the position of Warchief, a title held only by the greatest of Orcs. But Garm humiliated him by defeating him in battle, yet sparing his life. Did he mean to? That is irrelevant. Inkathu was disgraced, his ambitions crushed. He dedicated himself to seeking revenge on the human who cast him down. Abandoning the battlefield, he dedicated himself instead to He of Riven Sight and the mysteries of Night and Shadow. Inkathu was once amongst the greatest of Orcish warriors, his name sung in tales and spoken of with respect. Now, his name is spoken in hushed whispers, when it is spoken at all. No longer a warrior, he instead became amongst the most feared of the Orcish Shadowhunters. And some day, he will hunt Garm.

- "Base elements are the foundation of all things, for life this is theorized to be a soul. Although I've yet to bare witness, it is widely rumored that souls of the dying can be trapped and manipulated. To toy with the very essence of existence, I pulse with anticipation!
- "The books I carry are primarily of a forgotten script. Although I'm capable of reading them I'm not completely cognitive of their meaning."
- Lezard and Ahmvvar once shared a simple journey of convenience. Nothing major, just a week long trek from a major city to a remote mountain village through somewhat hostile nature. Ahmvvar's lack of experience with greater society makes him (understandably) somewhat distrustful, which often makes him a non-compelling companion. Lezard views his skeptical nature as an asset, it makes him predictable. Trust can be broken but distrust can be manipulated and leveraged; it's the result that matters after all! However there are plenty like Ahmvvar in the world, this alone would not make him noteworthy. What truly drew Lezard to Ahmvvar was his unique spear. Lezard believes that Ahmvvar will one day forge a spear of divine grade and it is for this reason alone he has opted to maintain contact.
BOND: "Ahmvvar will play an important role in the events to come. I have foreseen it!"
- "Hadrian, such a pious, egotistical fool. Judgement without introspection, raving of human exceptionalism; if he learned his uncle were part elf, how would he react?... AHHAHAHAHAha! The product of tainted linage, such delicious hypocrisy!"

Question and Answer: Round 2 -The Present- Willa, what more can you tell us about The Seekers?
- Willa, is there any romantic interest in your life?
- Willa, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
- What frightening truth have some of Ahmvvar's brothers been keeping from him all these years?
- The Seekers are those members of my clan of bards through the ages who accompanied the greatest adventurers of their time and composed the epics that everyone has heard in inns and taverns throughout the land. We all hope to be able to take the name granted to the celebrated ones in our family, but more than anything it would be the greatest honour to be the first female scion to have it bestowed upon me. Not many people without a great interest in the ballads sung around the fireside will have heard the name "Seeker", but it is like a birthright held only for those of us who achieve immortal greatness through song. The first Seeker, whose story has become almost as famous as that of the adventurers he sung of, was Jord Seeker. His work was The Rime of the Tenth Elf-King, which should need little more said about it. Sometimes I wish there were a lost Eleventh Elf-King for some adventurers to find so that I could come up with my own ode... But I could never live up to such inspired melody crafting. I shall have to find my own path.
- Ah, love. I've certainly tried my hand at a love song or two in my time, but mostly only to convince some rogue to allow me to tag along in the hope of seeing something songworthy. *That* never worked out well. Usually at least they didn't ditch me in the middle of some horrible wasteland, but after a few close calls I ended up just going along with it until it became obvious they were hardly the next Crozdar and I'd slip off at the next village. Some day perhaps I'll find someone to settle down with, but my first love is the art of storytelling through song, and all else must come after that, for now at least.
- Oh-ho, this ties into my previous answer a little... That one, there, with the oversized sword. Garm, I think? Definitely not compensating for anything with *that*. Solid fighter, that one, and took it well when I left his party. Certainly one of the more promising groups I was with, but I never like to stay too long with any party. Get too involved and it feels like I'm compromising the story somehow. I suppose sleeping with them probably counts as "too involved" but my father's views are not as outdated as I'd hope and it's hard enough getting invited on adventures even when I am providing, ahem, incentives. [Bond: This is not my first adventure with Garm]
- Ahmvvar's people are under attack from the slavers in the west. He was made an Envoy not just to stop his people being forgotten, but to start to forge an alliance to save them from a future in chains.

- Garm, have your battles left you with any noticeable scars? Do you wear them proudly or try to conceal them?
When Garm was still young and just beginning his training, he was told he must choose a weapon that speaks to him. Naturally, he chose the largest sword in the Hall of Blades. However, that sword was much larger than he was, and he had no hope of wielding it at such a young age. The kind Master of Youth came forward to present him a smaller sword, fit for training at his age, and explained that as he grows stronger, he will grow to be able to use the greatsword. This did not sit well with Garm, and he refused the smaller sword. After much pleading and arguing, the Master of Youth went on to attend the other young ones, realizing the futility of arguing. Garm stubbornly continued trying to remove the enormous blade from its high mount on the display rack. Garm’s peers began their initial training in the art, while he continued to toil at removing the greatsword. Most of the masters found the attempt amusing, while the rest were simply perplexed why no one has stopped him yet (but, were much too busy to bother with the effort themselves). They say three days passed this way, until Garm had managed to finally the move the gigantic weapon. Through force of will and pure muscle, he was able to push the sword’s center of gravity just above the top mount of the display rack. He triumphantly grasped the guard at either side, and slid the greatsword out of its holster. However, the weight proved too great for him and he stumbled backwards, dropping the sword on his right foot. In the fall, his large toe was severed and the rest were mangled by the weight of the piece of iron. *He makes no attempt to hide his butchered foot, however he does wear shoes. It becomes apparent naturally in his stance. - Garm, what glorious achievement do you dream of accomplishing in your travels?
Garm Log, day 1: "Thus begins the Garm Log, Today I met with the trusty crew of the Heart of Oak and began my preparations to set sail. They are a boisterous bunch, and we shared many tales over grog. Tomorrow, we will set sail across The Yearning Abyss to the north lands. My master has commanded that I keep this log, in order to never forget the lessons I learn on my journey. In addition, he instructed that I never forget my purpose: To find a pupil and train him in the art of the blade. The masters say that if your pupil does not surpass you, you have failed. I pity my future pupil then, as that will be quite a task!” - Garm, which of your fellow companions have you known from a previous adventure? How do you know them, and what are your opinions of them? (Fill in a Bond with another player character.)
Garm Log, day 43: “I have long read about the nomadic people of this continent and their curious, avoidant style of fighting. Today was a fortunate day indeed, as I came across one such of these people, and a warrior no less! He called himself Ahmvvar, and was clearly no stranger to the art of combat. I began with some friendly banter, however I am still not used to the dialect they use here in the north lands. After some time of nodding along blindly, I grew quite bored. In the middle of some tale I failed to understand, I issued a challenge to spar with this man so I could get some insight into the style of his people. I had no doubt he would accept. The spar was fierce. I began on the offensive, as is The Way. I struck heavy blow after heavy blow. With each of my strikes he spun into it, foolishly I thought, but with a strength that matched my own I was turned away each time. How can such a small man match my strength? The battle waged for some time. He wisely knew the dire cost of risking a blow from me and stayed on the defensive. However, I never landed a single blow. After the sun had set we both grew tired, and called the spar a draw. We will resume another time, I’m sure of it.” ( Bond: Ahmvvar and I are regular training partners.) - Who has a personal grudge against Lezard that goes beyond a simple prejudice of his magical abilities?
His elder sister, Alina. She had the potential to be a brilliant and prodigious alchemist. However, while Lezard was allowed to freely study the science, she was forced to spend her time learning the way of manners, how to present herself, and how to make herself a suitable wife to some wealthy and powerful aristocrat. When her parents found out that she had been reading Lezard’s books on the subject and studying alchemy, they scolded her and separated the two so that she no longer had access to any such studious material, as to not distract her from learning her ‘real’ duties. She always suspected Lezard was jealous of her superior talents, and came to the conclusion that the only way that they could have found out is if he told them. The bastard!

Lezard is most suspicious of Willa because her supernatural abilities are the most dissonant with his understanding of the world. Although he doesn't consider her an intellectual threat, he does recognize her as his closest cognitive rival. Lezard also views her charm negatively and although he considers it inherently deceitful, he's unable to deny that her words can compel him. The Fox, without question.

"Hadrian, such a pious, egotistical fool. Judgement without introspection, raving of human exceptionalism; if he learned his uncle were part elf, how would he react?... AHHAHAHAHAha! The product of tainted linage, such delicious hypocrisy!" I'm going to accept the part-elf thing as canon, but I'm not going to accept the "Surprise, Caph, but your character is a racist!" bit as canon because nope. Sorry! Hadrian, it seems you also are acquainted with Ahmvvar. How did you meet, and what is your opinion of them? (You may optionally form a second Bond with this person, or decide that you do not have strong feelings about them at this time.) "Ahmvvar? Ah, that traveling spearman from the nomadic tribes of the Western Borderlands! His path has crossed mine on many occasions, and we have at times shared a meal or a conversation. He has a good heart, and serves the best interests of his people, even when that service takes him far from all he knows. His people's ways are strange to me, but not without merit. However, I hope in time that he shall come to accept Ethar's Precepts and let them guide his life. I truly believe they would serve him well." Which omen foretells the future events of your travels: The Girl, The Holy Symbol, or The Madman? "Bah, fortune telling. You are no seer, friend, nor a priest. Those cards in your hands hold no more power to tell the future than they do to darken the sun. Waste not my time with your drivel." That said, SPH, if you're using our answers to this as a sort of randomizer, then use The Madman.

It was not by my hand that Hadrian was made a human supremacist! Law is what divides humans from the lesser races - the orcs, the goblins, whathaveyou. You know this, but you do not understand it. Not like I do. Here, in the southern lands, you take much for granted. The application of the law is unequal, but the law is fair. Ethar has seen to that. Sorry Caph, Hadrian might be less bothered by Elves (perhaps considering them capable of standing with humans) but certainly he'd consider their tendency toward relatively free and lawless appearing societal structures to be a reflection of their innate inferiority to humans.

What tendency are you talking about? Elves maintain villages, towns, cities, and kingdoms in Dungeon World, just like humans do So do several other races. And stop telling me what my character would think.

Elvish order is largely a product of attunement with nature. If Hadrian actually sees this type of passive derivation of order as equal to the human drive to create order in the world, then OK, whatever, he's your character!... but please elaborate on what Hadrian's position on order is because it seems to me that'd he see humans as at least slightly above Elves, Halflings and Dwarfs even though he wouldn't see them as low as beastly races like Goblins and Orcs.
FWIW, I didn't think of Hadrian as someone who would be inherently racist, but rather a character that would see these races as lesser out of ignorance or lack of experience with them. I wasn't anticipating that it'd take much to change his opinion, but rather that the initial shock of learning he's related to someone with Elven blood would be significant. It was also constructed as a statement from Lezard, meaning that Lezard suspects that Hadrian wouldn't be particularly accepting of an Elf. If Hadrian were to learn of his relation to an Elf, and NOT be particularly bothered by it, this would potentially frustrate Lezard.

- I'm not sure if it's old familial prejudices talking, but I've never trusted a wizard. Maybe it's just because "I waved a wand and killed all the monsters" doesn't have the same pizzazz to it as "I fought on despite grievous wounds in single combat against the goblin king", or maybe it's just because this one seems particularly self-serving and dismissive of others. I'm always suspicious of a travelling companion whose strength is mystical rather than physical. A strong or quick fighter you can instinctively assess, but when the power comes from a side of nature best left unexplored, it makes me very uneasy.

If Hadrian were to learn of his relation to an Elf, and NOT be particularly bothered by it, this would potentially frustrate Lezard. I think you're approaching this from such different premises than I am that we're going to have to just work it out in play? Worth noting is that when Hadrian said "men" he wasn't referring to "humans" but rather to the category of sapients who are not monsters - humans, dwarves, elves, etc. As opposed to orcs, goblins, gnolls, and the like. And they have their own order and laws as well. Remember that Hadrian is the son of a successful caravan master and that his functions as the Paladin of Ethar involve a fair amount of judicial and diplomatic work. He's definitely not lacking experiences with other races. Although Hadrian would be a bit upset to learn that his Uncle is half-elvish, since all of Hadrian's grandparents are human... "Elvish order is largely a product of attunement with nature." Is this canonical? This doesn't seem familiar to me, and doesn't match any of my previous experience with Dungeon World, so it's not how I was imagining the elves. Dungeon World elves are more attuned to nature and magic (based on racial moves), but if you look at the worldbuilding section of the GM guide, elvish, dwarvish, halfing, etc. settlements are not substantially different from human ones. "but please elaborate on what Hadrian's position on order is because it seems to me that'd he see humans as at least slightly above Elves, Halflings and Dwarfs" Hadrian's position on order is that adherence to some form of law and order is what sets the civilized races apart from the monstrous ones. If he were to judge one civilization as superior to another, it would be on the criteria of superior adherence to Ethar's Precepts (which I have not written because leaving that open to development during play is strictly superior), but we do know that he does not like slavery, and values justice in the form of equal application of the law to all regardless of their personal strength, wealth, or social influence. He values the preservation of order over individual freedom in many cases.

The wandering warrior artist Garm came into our land by way of the Great South Bridge. I had drawn sentry duty along our southern borders and saw him approaching over hill and dale. His giant sword and ruined foot made an interesting contrast. I approached to check that his intentions had peaceable motives and to offer him water which he politely waved away.
The then broke into a long monologue. I could tell he was a bombast but seemed good enough natured so I took no concern.
When he then drew his blade laughing, I knew he wanted to test his steel against mine. In training together we have forged the bond of Brothers in Sparring. Perhaps he considers me but an effective hand to train with, but by my customs he is now my younger brother and if his need is dire I must now protect his life with mine.
Which omen foretells the future events of your travels: The Magician, The Chariot, or The Tower?
Ah the cards of the diviners ... unfortunately I know to well that there is some dark portent on the rise and my journey may indeed lead to a tragic fall. The tower is the card, yet I know not if the coming fall is mine, my companions', or that if some agent yet unknown.

Yeah, I can see why you would've thought that if I squint hard enough. I think it was kind of a stretch, but whatever. I actually edited "humans" out in a couple of other places to avoid exactly that interpretation, and I didn't realize I'd missed that one.
Anyway. Hadrian not racist or speciesist. Misunderstanding resolved?

Garm Log, day 524: “I was awoken by the abrupt stopping of the wagon and Rhangyl shouting a yelp of danger back to me. Grabbing my sword and bursting out of the wagon, I set to survey the area. The wagon driver held up a hand and pointed forward. From atop the hill I could see clearly, nearly a half-league away in the valley below stood three men in heavy armor, standing firm before a dozen orcs. I made a signal to stay the wagon and began my sprint to aid in the battle. I proved too slow, and the melee was long over before I arrived. I watched from afar as the men, outnumbered as they were, put on an impressive display of coordination. Each man would step, in turn, to strike a killing blow against an orc while his two compatriots guarded either side of him with their large shields. The combat, which appeared hopeless for these men, turned swiftly in their favor. When I finally made it to the battlefield, there was nothing left of the orcs but a pile of bodies. I invited the three men to join me on my journey northward and they obliged. They introduced themselves as Maximillian, Edris, and Hadrian and spoke to me of their faith in Ethar. The religions of this lands are strange to me still. They also told me of their mission and the growing orcish horde that is consuming this region. I offered my assistance. I have read little of the holy knights of the north lands, and the Combat Library held no records of how they fight. This will be an excellent opportunity to record their style and to display the Art of the Blade to the poor plagued people of this area!” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Garm Log, day 919: “... That night, Klein introduced us to his new friend, Willa. She’s a teller of tales and song spinner. Here in the northlands, they call them Bards. Elendrial argued that she seems rather frail, but Klein insisted that we needed her talents to pass on our deeds. I enthusiastically agreed, of course! Elendrial seems rather annoyed by the decision. For one as old as he, he surely doesn't express much appreciation for recording history.” Garm Log, day 920: “... While conversing around the campfire, Klein eagerly steered the conversation to topic of swords. I did not take him for one who studied weapon design. I had much to say on the matter, but Klein hushed me to hear Willa's thoughts. To my surprise, and Erandrial's exasperation, she expressed a great interest in the topic. With such enthusiasm, maybe she would make a good student of The Art? Garm Log, day 921: “... Willa seemed surprised and even blushed whenever I told her that a woman of her stature had no hope of wielding the weapon I carried. I didn’t mean to embarrass the poor girl, but she is quite tiny and frail. I doubt she could even hope to lift a greatsword, let alone use it in combat. I encouraged her by telling her that with enough training, maybe one day she could wield it, after all!” Garm Log, day 924: “... I do enjoy listening to the girl’s music, but she does not pay enough attention to her footwork and seems distracted whenever I explain proper cutting technique. She's much too old to be a proper pupil, and I fear she has no talent in the art of swordcraft to begin with. I won’t give up on her, though! I have assigned her 100 vertical slashes against a tree by morning.” Garm Log, day 927: “... The centaur's spear narrowly missed her. I called out to put down her instrument and use the technique I showed her yesterday with her blade. She clearly lacks confidence in her abilities, as she gave me a very confused and distressed look in response. Unfortunately, Klein stabbed the beast from behind before she could properly duel the creature. Felling a centaur would surely have raised her spirit.” Garm Log, day 929: “... Abruptly, Willa left our party today. I’m sad to see her go. Her bladework has a long way to go and she was a poor student, all told, but she was a talented song spinner and I took great pleasure in her stories. Maybe one day our paths will cross again and I can resume her training! Klein seems dejected...” ( Bond: Willa needs education on this fighting business, and I’m going to provide it whether she wants it or not!) - Which omen foretells the future events of your travels: The Shadow, The Wind, or The Beast?
The Beast is the omen of Garm's future.

Nearly two years ago, around this same season of mid-spring, disaster befell the small mining village of Redshore. Located neatly at the meeting of three valuable terrain features - the iron-rich hills to the north, the coast to the east, and dozens of miles of forest to the west - the settlement was remote but prosperous, expanding rapidly into a "boom town" and finding much trade. All the same, the town was not especially noteworthy in the grand scheme of the overall region until the mysterious event. For unknown reasons, seemingly overnight, the town's inhabitants were allegedly wiped from existence. The surrounding forest underwent a grisly transformation, as if by some dark, terrible curse. The trees became barren and crooked, as if dead, yet they also lived on, in some sort of perverted state of vegetative undeath. The wildlife in the forest seemed similarly effected, becoming sickened and vicious forms of their former selves. Over these previous two years, numerous groups have attempted to investigate this "Cursed Forest" and the ghost town beyond, yet each expedition has proven a failure. While the curse only permeates the last few hours of the trip along the old forested trade route, there have been no reports of successfully entering this area and making it back out to tell the tale. Sailors who have viewed the town from the sea without braving a landing have noted that many of the buildings still stand, albeit in a state of disrepair. Numerous rumors abound regarding what can be found within the town limits, but with no first-hand sources to point to, their reliability naturally deserves skepticism. And so, here you walk, having just moments ago crossed the threshold into the so-called Cursed Woods. The collection of you five adventurers, considered together as a whole to be the most capable force yet to investigate the matter, have agreed to do just that. You each have your reasons, I'm sure - be it moral obligation, glory, the intrigue of unknown magical forces, or the reliable likelihood of treasure and fortune - but you've all agreed to set aside your individual reasons under an alliance of cooperation. It is mid-day as you make your way along the road through the deathly forest. Little overgrowth has occurred, allowing the road to continue to be functional, though the plants that you do witness around the edges of the path are blackened shriveled, and unidentifiable. Although the trees bare few leaves and the canopy of foliage above you is nearly non-existent, an inexplicable gloom hangs over you which dims the sun significantly. You've noticed nothing yet dangerous, but the mood among you is tense in anticipation.
What do you do?

" A cursed forest, what silliness!" Lezard thinks to himself as an unhinged smile subtlety creeps across his face . Lezard breaks the silence " In my decades of study I've encountered no evidence of a proper curse nor a principle from which one might derive." " However, it is somewhat hard to deny the appearance of supernaturally twisted nature..." " ...but I wonder, does anyone else feel as though we're walking in circles?" (Can I Discern Realities COACH? PUT ME IN COACH, I WANTA Discern Realities SO BAD!) If 7-9+: What here is not what it appears to be? If 10+: What happened here recently? If 10+: What is about to happen?
